Quick Summary

Dr. Yeshi Dhonden was the Dalai Lama’s doctor between 1960 and 1980. Today, Dr. Dhonden sees other patients and his herbal treatment has become famous throughout the world. One of the challenges of obtaining this treatment is that patients (or their representatives) must travel to the MenTseeKhang Clinic in Rajasthan, India and wait to be seen by Dr. Dhonden in order to receive the treatment. The trip to McLeod Ganj, near the India/Pakistan border isn’t easy and once there, patients must buy a token and then wait in line to be seen by the doctor. The treatment includes not just herbal medicinals, but also spiritual practices.

Detailed Introduction

Dr. Yeshi Dhonden was the Dalai Lama’s doctor for 20 years between 1960 and 1980. He graduated from Lhasa Mentseekhang in Tibet and later founded MenTseeKhang, the Tibetan Medicine Institute in Dharamsala, India. He has been seeing patients at his clinic in McLeod Ganj for 45 years [1][2]. Dr. Dhonden’s treatments are famous worldwide, but other Tibetan doctors have had success treating cancer using spiritual and herbal medicines as well.

Tibetan medicine is different than western, conventional medicine. This is a system that combines the wisdom of Ayurveda and Indian models of medicine with medical information from China, Persia, and Greece. In the 11th century, the Tibetan system was incorporated into a code of healing that resonated with Buddhist spiritual beliefs. It focuses on balancing the body and the mind using herbalism and spiritual practices [4]. It is especially effective at treating:

  • Cancer
  • Mental disorders including stress
  • Arthritis
  • Liver problems including hepatitis
  • Chronic diseases [4]

Tibetan medicine has a strong legacy having been practiced for thousands of years. It combines the wisdom of Buddhism with holistic interventions [3][4].

Safety and Effectiveness

Dr. Dhonden is most well known for his treatment of cancer. His cure rates are better than cure rates using conventional medicine [2]. Tibetan treatments often produce no unpleasant side effects [4].

Due to a shortage of medicines prescribed by Dr. Dhonden, the clinic currently only prescribes 2 months worth of medicine for patients [2].
